Our Magnet Theme

Northeast Academy Arts Magnet School strongly values the arts as an integral part of our children’s education. We develop the interests and talents of our students through a blended approach by pairing the arts with core academics."

- Ryan Chaney, Principal of Northeast Academy Arts Magnet School

NEA students engage in challenging and complex instruction designed to develop creative thinkers and innovative learners. Through interdisciplinary projects with an arts focus, students are given opportunities to become creative, innovative learners who consistently strive for their personal best.

Northeast Academy Arts Magnet School offers a variety of classes and activities that extend beyond the current arts curriculum of the Groton Public Schools, including: chorus, band, orchestra, small ensembles, drama, community performances, before/after school clubs and other enrichment opportunities.

School and Program Highlights

  1. Arts-Focused Magnet Partnerships: Learning is enriched through creative partnerships with the Flock Theatre, Connecticut Storytelling Center, cARTie, and the Mystic Museum of Art.
  1. Creative Exploration & Artistic Expression: Students explore their talents through vocal and instrumental music, visual arts, and multimedia, highlighted by the second-grade arts show, grades 3–5 strings, grades 4–5 band, and grades 2–5 chorus.
  1. Signature Drama & Performance Experiences: The annual 4th and 5th-grade drama production, with a full cast and tech crew, is a cornerstone experience within the school’s arts programmiFirst-graderades students also have their own play experience.
  1. Recognized for Academic Excellence: Northeast Academy has been named a School of Distinction by the State of Connecticut in recent years for both academic achievement and academic growth.
  1. Social-Emotional Learning & Student Growth: Students are supported through the Journey to Success program and Second Step, both of which emphasize key social-emotional learning principles and encourage every child to strive for their personal best.
  • Enrichment Beyond the Classroom: A wide range of clubs, field trips, and enrichment activities focused on the arts provide students with authentic, hands-on creative experiences.
  • Celebrating the Arts: All students participate in two consecutive days of arts workshops, activities, and performances geared towards our school’s mission statement. This is a huge community event for past and present NEA students alike as many students from GMS and FHS come back to NEA to perform.
  • Interdisciplinary Projects: NEA has developed a LART class (library and art) where students in most grades are given the opportunity to pair the arts with core texts in various subjects. These interdisciplinary projects allow students to think critically and learn content in meaningful, creative ways.
